On January 15, 2023, the inaugural meeting of the Council for the Promotion of International Vaccine Cooperation (CPIVC) and the first session of the first CPIVC Committee meeting was held online.

As President XI Jinping has stated, China has always upheld the vision of building a community of common health for mankind. To the world, and especially to developing countries, China has provided vaccines, actively carried out joint production, and promoted the equitable distribution of vaccines. Since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about new challenges to global vaccine coordination, vaccine rollout and global health at large. As a result, international cooperation has become the key to achieving the equitable distribution of vaccines and the promotion of health.

Under the context of hoping to facilitate international exchange and cooperation on vaccines, promote global health, and meet the needs of both the global vaccine industry and the principle of global health equity, CPIVC was established. As a result, CPIVC’s mission is to serve government and private sector around the world for vaccine procurement and introduction in the public sector, serve China’s strategy of “going global” and “bringing in”, serve China’s dual circulation strategy, serve the enhancement of China’s global leadership, innovation and competitiveness, and serve the promotion of mutually beneficial cooperation.

At the inaugural meeting, all members voted online to adopt the Council’s Election Measures and Work Regulations, and established the first organizational structure through election. CHEN Xianyi was elected as Chairperson, LIU Jianzhong, DU Heng, YANG Yue, ZHAO Fanghui and LIANG Xiaofeng were elected as Vice Chairpersons, YUAN Yuan was elected as Secretary General, and 24 senior experts were elected as Standing Committee Members.

President FENG Duojia of the China Association for Vaccines congratulated the establishment of CPIVC, saying, “We hope that CPIVC will give full play to its advantages in resources, mobilizing positively in all aspects to promote international cooperation and exchange for enterprises and institutions in the Chinese vaccine industry across the entire process of scientific and technological innovation, method innovation, process innovation, safeguarding of the industrial chain, and vaccination administration. To also take this as an opportunity to promote the sharing and mutual benefit of vaccines for global public health, within the context of the dual circulation of domestic and international markets”.

The inaugural meeting was followed by an online seminar on the international vaccine cooperation ecosystem. Over 70 experts and scholars from universities, research institutes, international organizations, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccine-related enterprises, and other organizations attended to listen to the keynote speeches and discussions by senior domestic and foreign experts on important topics such as global vaccine immunization, international joint production and vaccine R&D.

The establishment of CPIVC will help in building a comprehensive global service platform for academic exchange and industry cooperation in the vaccine sector for both domestic and foreign experts and scholars. It will help serve the exchange of vaccine-related information and increased cooperation between China and the international community. It will also promote the exchange of resources, expertise and mutual support, to drive forward the development of the global vaccine and related biological products industry, promote technological innovation, and enable China’s unique contribution to the global health cause.
